This holiday season, Florida is set to witness an unprecedented number of travelers, as millions of residents and visitors hit the road, take to the skies, and opt for other transportation methods. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), from December 21 to January 1, Florida will break travel records, surpassing previous high numbers.
Florida and Nationwide Travel Surge
AAA projects that 7.1 million Floridians will travel at least 50 miles this holiday period, marking an increase of 220,000 compared to last year’s record. Nationally, more than 119 million Americans are expected to travel, an increase of 3 million from 2023, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by just 64,000 travelers.
Road Trips Dominating Travel Plans
Driving remains the most popular travel choice for Floridians, with 6.4 million residents anticipated to embark on road trips, up by 200,000 from last year. Nationwide, road trips are expected to reach 107 million, just short of the 2019 record. AAA’s Mark Jenkins explains that the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of road trips make them especially appealing, particularly for families with children.
Despite stable gas prices averaging $3.09 per gallon in Florida, travelers should expect longer travel times. INRIX predicts delays could be up to 30% longer than usual, especially on the weekends before Christmas and New Year’s Day. To avoid congestion, travelers are encouraged to start their journeys early or after peak commuting hours.
Air Travel and Other Transportation Surge
In addition to road trips, air travel will also see record numbers. AAA expects nearly 7.9 million Americans will take domestic flights this holiday season, surpassing last year’s numbers. Flight costs are slightly higher this year, with domestic fares averaging $830, up 4% from 2023, and international flights costing $1,630 on average, a 13% increase.
Other modes of transport, including buses, trains, and cruises, are also seeing significant growth. AAA forecasts 4.47 million people will travel using these options, marking the highest number in 20 years. Cruise bookings, in particular, are soaring, with a 37% increase compared to last year as families opt for festive voyages filled with activities and meals.
With the holiday travel rush in full swing, it’s crucial to plan ahead, anticipate busy travel days, and consider travel insurance to protect against unexpected disruptions such as weather delays.
