OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, announced that it will partially transform into a for-profit company in 2025. The company will adopt the status of a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which will allow it to attract more capital to continue developing its artificial intelligence (AI).
Although it will be a for-profit entity, OpenAI will remain committed to its social mission, seeking to generate positive impact in areas such as health, education and science.
A Structural Change to Compete in AI
This new business model aims to balance shareholder interests with public benefit. OpenAI aims to raise the necessary resources to expand its advanced linguistic models, while maintaining a structure that prioritizes its social mission.
The company will continue to operate with a non-profit division charged with driving charitable initiatives, led by an independent team.
The impact of the Transition and Internal Opposition
The road to this change has not been without challenges. In the past, the board of directors attempted to fire the CEO, Sam Altman, which raised concerns among investors, such as Microsoft. In addition, Elon Musk, one of OpenAI’s founders, filed a legal motion to block the transition to a for-profit company, which could complicate the process.
Competition and the Need for More Resources
The PBC model is also being adopted by OpenAI’s competitors, such as Anthropic and xAI. These tech giants invest billions in AI development, a sector that requires enormous amounts of computational resources. OpenAI noted that the evolution of artificial intelligence requires more capital than they initially anticipated.
