Ron DeSantis supports abolishing property taxes in Florida

Date:

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has expressed his support for the idea of abolishing property taxes in the state. Through a series of posts on the social media platform X, Ron DeSantis stated that he would back a constitutional amendment to achieve this goal. The discussion arose from an exchange on social media, where users and public figures debated the need to reduce or eliminate this type of levy.

A debate sparked on social media

On Thursday, Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy posted a message on X about a bill to repeal federal regulations on gas cans. “Only the government could ruin a gas can. Let’s fix it. #GasCanFreedom,” Roy wrote. Florida’s First Lady, Casey DeSantis, responded to the post, emphasizing that the federal government should not be involved in everyday matters like this. Ron DeSantis joined the debate, stating, “True…”.

Later, another user brought up the issue of property taxes, arguing that they should not be based on the assumed value of newly constructed homes. Ron DeSantis responded with a firm, “I agree!”. This exchange led the governor to elaborate on his stance, pointing out that property taxes are a local, not state, matter and that eliminating them would require a constitutional amendment approved by at least 60% of voters.

How would eliminating property taxes impact Florida?

Property taxes are a crucial source of funding for essential services in Florida. These taxes finance public schools, pay for police and firefighters, maintain roads, and fund other services such as parks. However, Ron DeSantis did not detail how the state would compensate for the loss of these funds if the elimination of this levy is approved.

Florida has historically been considered a taxpayer-friendly state. The Sunshine State is one of nine in the U.S. that does not have a state income tax. To make up for this, the state generates revenue through sales taxescorporate profit taxes, and other mechanisms. Ron DeSantis’ proposal could represent a significant shift in Florida’s fiscal structure, though many questions remain about its feasibility and consequences.

Meanwhile, the debate continues on social media, where citizens and political leaders are still discussing the pros and cons of this bold proposal. Ron DeSantis has made it clear that he is willing to push for a constitutional amendment to reform or eliminate property taxes, but the path to achieving this still seems long and complex.
