The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, announced the reactivation of the 287(g) program. That is a measure that strengthens collaboration between local police and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the detention of undocumented immigrants. This initiative is in line with former President Donald Trump‘s strategy to tighten immigration policies in the United States.
Ron DeSantis and 287(g) Program: A State with Stricter Rules
DeSantis expressed his commitment to making Florida one of the most restrictive states on illegal immigration. The 287(g) program allows local authorities to take over certain immigration enforcement functions that were previously only performed by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

According to information from ICE, this programme seeks to enhance community safety by facilitating the identification and deportation of aliens with criminal records or in an irregular situation. Currently, various state and local law enforcement agencies have implemented this scheme in states such as Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others.
The reactivation of this measure marks another step in Florida’s strategy to tighten immigration policies and strengthen surveillance in its territory.
