Ron DeSantis Launches Government Cut in Florida to Reduce Spending

Date:

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, presented an initiative focused on reducing the government structure and optimising the use of state resources. Inspired by the federal model implemented by Elon Musk under Donald Trump‘s administration, the plan proposes to eliminate more than 740 positions and review the operation of 70 state boards and commissions.

During his conference on 24 February, DeSantis explained that these actions seek to eliminate unnecessary spending without affecting essential services.

‘We are eliminating structures that consume resources without providing real benefits to citizens,’ he said.

The proposal also calls for independent audits of universities and state agencies to detect inefficiencies and reallocate funds to priority programmes. To streamline this process, the Florida government will use artificial intelligence, a key tool in reviewing budgets and analysing the relevance of various public entities.

In addition to restructuring, DeSantis proposed eliminating property taxes, arguing that they represent an ‘unnecessary burden’ for taxpayers. However, this measure requires the approval of 60 per cent of voters and a constitutional amendment.

This reform package comes on top of recent legislation pushed by DeSantis to toughen immigration laws, including the death penalty for certain crimes committed by immigrants. The measures have generated widespread debate among conservative sectors and civil rights organisations.
