President Joe Biden underscored the critical partnership between the United States and Mexico in combating the fentanyl epidemic, following the seizure of over 20 million doses of illicit fentanyl by Mexican security forces. This breakthrough, enough to endanger 15% of the U.S. population, reflects the ongoing commitment of both nations to disrupt the deadly flow of synthetic opioids.
Biden extended his gratitude to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for her leadership and to law enforcement teams on both sides of the border. “This work saves lives and protects families”, he said, emphasizing the human impact behind the statistics.
Record Progress in Curbing the Opioid Epidemic
Under Biden’s administration, fentanyl seizures at the border have surged to unprecedented levels, surpassing totals from the previous five years combined. Authorities have also dismantled key drug cartels, imprisoning numerous leaders and financial operatives responsible for trafficking operations.
Nationwide, these efforts have contributed to a historic 14% decline in overdose deaths—the largest drop ever recorded. “These aren’t just numbers”, Biden noted. “They’re families who no longer face the unimaginable loss of a loved one”.
Biden pledged to intensify collaboration with international partners like Mexico, vowing to seize more drugs, dismantle trafficking networks, and shield communities from harm. “We’re doubling down on our efforts”, he stated.
