This afternoon, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Law, which mandates the automatic detention of undocumented migrants accused of certain crimes, including theft.
What Is the Laken Riley Law and How Will It Affect Migrants?
- Under this legislation, authorities can detain any migrant who has committed:
- Theft, burglary, shoplifting, or assaulting a law enforcement officer.
- Any crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury to another person.
Democratic lawmakers have criticized the law, citing its exorbitant costs, estimating $83 billion in the first three years.
Opposition from Advocacy Groups
Several immigration advocacy groups oppose the law. Kelli Stump, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), stated:
“This legislation will not ensure or enhance public safety, and when combined with the president’s short-sighted and chaotic enforcement policies, it offers no substantial policy solution with any measurable positive effect.”
Trump’s Focus on Illegal Immigration
Combating illegal immigration has been Trump’s top priority. Shortly after taking office, he issued multiple executive orders, many aimed at blocking entry or expediting deportations of undocumented migrants.

Why Is It Called the Laken Riley Law?
The law is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by an undocumented Venezuelan migrant wanted for shoplifting. The perpetrator was sentenced to life in prison.
Trump welcomed Laken Riley’s parents to the White House, stating:
“We will keep Laken’s memory alive in our hearts forever.”
“With today’s action, her name will also live on forever in our country’s laws. This is a very important law,” he added.
