Ron DeSantis’ policies against undocumented immigrants have become even stricter after authorities approved these changes. The reforms aim to protect citizens and reduce crime rates in Florida.
These changes will directly impact individuals who do not have legal status in the U.S. Even for minor offenses, they will face significantly higher fines. In certain cases, penalties for committing crimes can range from longer prison sentences to the death penalty.
“Do not come to the state of Florida illegally. That is the premise”, Ron DeSantis said regarding the approval of the new policies against undocumented immigrants.
The new penalties of Ron DeSantis against undocumented immigrants
Under the new legislation, authorities could impose up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for a minor theft offense. Previously, the penalty was one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The new legislation establishes the death penalty for undocumented immigrants who commit capital offenses such as first-degree murder or child sexual abuse.
Due to the controversy about the new penalties against undocumented inmigrants, proposed by Ron DeSantis, some legislators argue that it is unconstitutional and are considering filing a lawsuit in court. Additionally, the policy prevents judges and juries from taking mitigating circumstances into account.
In this context, several advocacy groups have pointed out that the U.S. Supreme Court previously struck down a similar law in North Carolina, deeming it cruel and unusual punishment.
In addition to increasing penalties for all crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, Ron DeSantis ordered the creation of a new crime: entering Florida after illegally arriving in the country.
