Ron DeSantis and the battle over Florida’s immigration law

Date:

The Florida legislators approved a strict immigration law that will facilitate the detention of undocumented immigrants. However, the implementation of this regulation now depends on Governor Ron DeSantis, who will have the final say on its fate. The law, which directly benefits agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), aims to strengthen the enforcement of immigration rules in the state.

What does the TRUMP Act entail?

This week, the representatives of the Sunshine State voted in favor of the Addressing and Reforming Illegal Migration Policy (TRUMP) Act, which allocates $500 million to reinforce the enforcement of immigration laws and increase cooperation with the federal government. The regulation will allow the detention and deportation of certain foreigners, as well as penalize local authorities that do not collaborate with federal agencies.

Despite its approval, Ron DeSantis has expressed dissatisfaction with the law, calling it “weak” and criticizing the lack of additional restrictions for illegal immigrants.

The key role of Ron DeSantis

The text of the TRUMP Act grants the Commissioner of Agriculture, Wilton Simpson, control over the state’s immigration policy. Additionally, it creates a new position of Chief Immigration Officer, who will be under Simpson’s supervision. The regulation also delegates emergency powers to the state to execute immigration policies and allocates public funds to hire new officers, equip and train personnel, and reimburse counties for the rental of ICE detention centers.

Now, the future of the law depends on Ron DeSantis, who must decide whether to sign or veto it. On his social media, the governor already hinted that he has the “veto pen ready.” In a message on his X account, Ron DeSantis criticized legislators for approving a regulation that, in his opinion, weakens current laws and could turn Florida into a sanctuary state.

Meanwhile, the migrant community in Florida awaits the outcome of this decision with concern, as it could significantly impact their lives. If implemented, the law would mark a turning point in the state’s immigration policy.

What’s next for Florida?

With the approval of the legislators, Ron DeSantis holds the future of the TRUMP Act in his hands. His decision will not only affect undocumented immigrants but also local authorities and federal agencies tasked with enforcing immigration laws. Meanwhile, the debate over illegal immigration continues to divide Florida society, in a state that has become a focal point of the national discussion on this issue.
