Marco Rubio Begins Latin American Tour, Excluding Mexico From His Itinerary

Date:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will embark on his first international tour, visiting Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

This tour is one of Rubio‘s first significant moves as part of the Trump administration, although it has been confirmed that Mexico is not on the agenda, despite the sensitive issues that need to be addressed between the two governments, such as migration and security.

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants and fluent in Spanish, recently became the first Hispanic secretary of state in US history, reflecting the new administration’s intention to pay more attention to Latin America, especially to curb migration flows from the region.

Marco Rubio: Tensions with Panama and Support for the Venezuelan Opposition

Rubio‘s trip to Panama comes in a delicate context, following recent statements by President Donald Trump on the control of the Panama Canal. Rubio, in his confirmation hearing, expressed concern about China‘s growing role in the management of the canal, which he considers a violation of previous agreements established in the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties.

This issue has generated friction with the Panamanian authorities, who have interpreted these statements as an attempt to regain US influence over the canal.

Marco Rubio also used his tour to reaffirm US support for the Venezuelan opposition, particularly leaders Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado. This show of support comes in the wake of the controversial inauguration of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, who took office amid allegations of electoral fraud.

Rubio reiterated his government’s commitment to the restoration of democracy in the country and the release of political prisoners, in line with the democratic aspirations of the Venezuelan people.
