Trump Threatens Russia With Sanctions If Ukraine War Doesn’t End

Date:

Former US President Donald Trump has sent a strong message to Moscow, warning of ‘high taxes, tariffs and sanctions’ if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not stop the war in Ukraine. In a post on his social network Truth Social, Trump said he seeks an immediate agreement to avoid further loss of life and criticised the prolongation of the conflict.

‘STOP this ridiculous war!’ Trump wrote. He further emphasised that the US would have no choice but to impose harsh economic measures against Russia if no progress is made in finding a solution. Trump also reiterated his promise to resolve the conflict ‘within 24 hours’.

Russian Response and Conditions for a Deal

Trump‘s message prompted a reaction from Dmitri Polyanskiy, Russia‘s deputy ambassador to the UN, who expressed interest in knowing the specific terms of the deal proposed by the former president. According to Polyanskiy, the conflict cannot end without addressing the ‘root causes’ that led to the crisis in Ukraine, referring to the economic and military support the US has provided to the government of Volodymyr Zelensky.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine in 2022, has insisted on maintaining control over 20 per cent of currently occupied Ukrainian territory, including key regions such as Donetsk and Lugansk. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelensky declared that any peace deal would require an international force including US troops to ensure security.

An Uncertain Outlook

Despite heavy sanctions imposed by the West, Russia has managed to circumvent various restrictions and keep its economy functioning. However, the Kremlin is facing increasing pressure at home and abroad to define an exit strategy to avoid further losses.

Trump, for his part, continues to position himself as a key figure he believes could mediate the conflict and reduce the economic burden it has placed on the US. However, the lack of detail in his proposal raises doubts about how such a solution could materialise.
