Donald Trump warns Russia: tariffs and sanctions if Ukraine war doesn’t end

Date:

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that he will impose “high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions” on Russia if Vladimir Putin does not end the war in Ukraine. This statement marks his most direct stance on the conflict, which he pledged to resolve within 24 hours during his presidential campaign.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Donald Trump expressed his love for the Russian people and highlighted his relationship with Putin. However, he warned that the war will only worsen if a deal is not reached soon. “STOP this ridiculous war!” he exclaimed, adding that he would impose severe economic restrictions on Russian products sold in the United States and other countries. Trump urged a resolution, stating: “It’s time to MAKE A DEAL. NO MORE LIVES SHOULD BE LOST.”

Russia’s response

Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dimitri Polyanskiy, responded that the Kremlin needs clarity on the deal proposed by Donald Trump before considering it. “It’s not just a matter of ending the war. It’s primarily about addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis,” Polyanskiy explained.

The ambassador noted that Donald Trump is not responsible for U.S. policy in Ukraine since 2014 but now has the power to change the approach toward an agreement. According to Polyanskiy, U.S. actions have turned Ukraine into an “anti-Russian” state, funding its armament and escalating the conflict.

Sanctions and impact

Currently, Russia is the most sanctioned country in the world, and its financial and military systems have adapted to restrictions imposed by the United States and Europe. While it remains unclear what new measures Donald Trump might implement, his approach seeks to pressure the Kremlin while criticizing the financial costs this war represents for the United States.

Since the invasion in February 2022, the war in Ukraine has left thousands dead and vast regions devastated. The United States, under Joe Biden’s leadership, has provided hundreds of billions of dollars in economic and military aid to Volodymyr Zelensky’s government. However, Trump has suggested that Ukraine would receive less support if he returns to the presidency, describing Zelensky as a “skilled trader” for securing international resources.

The 24-hour promise

During his campaign, Donald Trump assured that he could end the war in a single day. “I’ll speak with both leaders, bring them together, and it will be resolved within 24 hours,” he stated in interviews and debates. According to Trump, his strategy relies on direct, swift negotiations to prevent further human and financial losses.

While specific details of his plans remain undisclosed, Donald Trump’s statements emphasize his intent to redefine U.S. policy toward Russia and Ukraine, promoting an approach that prioritizes swift agreements and reduces economic strain on his country.
