According to a recent report by Kaspersky, a cybersecurity company providing protection solutions for homes and businesses, organizations in our country faced over 42.4 million malware attacks in 2024. This alarming figure reflects the growing activity of criminal groups in the region. Clearly, this scenario demands deep reflection and, most importantly, concrete action to strengthen our digital infrastructure.
From my experience leading technological projects at Global Media Investment, I have seen how digital security can mean the difference between success and disaster. For me, it’s not just about protecting data but ensuring business continuity and customer trust. Technology is a powerful tool, but it is also an attractive target for those seeking to exploit vulnerabilities.
In the third quarter of 2024 alone, cyberattacks in Mexico had increased by 78% compared to the same period the previous year, averaging 3,124 attacks per week, according to the Checkpoint Quarterly Attack Report. This increase not only highlights the growing sophistication of cyberattacks but also underscores a troubling lack of preparedness in many companies.
Mexico and Cybercrime
Recently, Mexico also emerged as the most affected country by cybercrime in Latin America, accounting for more than half of such incidents in the region, as reported by Fortinet in a study. This statistic is a wake-up call for the business sector: our proximity and strong commercial ties with the United States place us squarely in the crosshairs of malicious actors seeking to compromise our operations.

It is crucial to foster a corporate culture that prioritizes digital security from top management to every employee. At the end of the day, even the most advanced technology is of little use if those who operate it do not understand the risks and how to mitigate them.
The government also has a critical role to play in protecting the nation’s digital ecosystem. I feel that mention must be made of the good work and recent initiatives aimed at strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure and promoting public-private collaboration. However, much remains to be done to build a comprehensive strategy that includes incentives for businesses to adopt advanced protection technologies.
From my perspective, it is also essential to promote partnerships with universities and research centers to train the next generation of cybersecurity experts. These efforts will not only benefit companies but also contribute to the development of a more secure and competitive digital economy.
