Disney will close 2024 as the only studio to surpass $2 billion in revenue at the U.S. box office. This historic achievement was led by the releases of Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed $652 million and $636 million, respectively, according to Box Office Mojo data.
In addition, Moana 2, released at the end of November, added $339 million to the total figure, ranking fifth in the annual ranking.
These figures stand out not only for their impact at the box office, but also for their historical relevance. Inside Out 2 become the 11th highest-grossing film of all time and the most successful in the animated genre, while Deadpool & Wolverine ranks 12th in the same ranking, according to Deadline.
Disney: Positive Projections with New Releases
Disney‘s success in 2024 doesn’t end with these figures. Films such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, with $171 million, and Alien: Romulus, which accumulated $105 million, also contributed to the studio’s performance. However, expectations are even higher with the imminent release of Mufasa, the Lion King prequel, and the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet, scheduled for Christmas.
A Triumphant Return After a Discreet 2023
This is the seventh year since 2010 that Disney surpassed $2 billion at the box office, a milestone it had not reached since 2019. The difference with 2023 is remarkable, as titles like The Marvels and Wish failed to attract massive audiences. This solid comeback demonstrates the entertainment giant’s ability to connect with audiences through innovative stories and established franchises.
With 2024 closing with multiple records and high expectations for upcoming releases, Disney reaffirms its position as the undisputed leader in the film industry.
