In Miami, drivers should be alert to a new type of scam that has affected several users of parking lots and parking meters. Criminals have placed fake QR codes on parking signs, redirecting drivers to fraudulent websites where they steal personal and banking information.
Massive Recall of Fraudulent QR Codes
The Miami Parking Authority reacted quickly to this fraud, recalling more than 7,000 counterfeit QR codes in various areas of the city, including Fort Lauderdale. Alejandra Argudin, CEO of the authority, noted that any QR codes found on its signs are now considered fraudulent. The authority has also covered parking signs to prevent more people from falling into the trap.
“Since we identified the fraudulent codes, we have stepped up our vigilance. We know that scams have increased in recent weeks and we want to prevent more drivers from being affected,” Argudín explained. Although the scams were initially limited, growing concern among motorists has led authorities to act with greater urgency.
How to Protect Yourself from Scams?
The CEO of the Parking Authority advised Miami residents not to use QR codes on signs and, instead, to use the official app to make payments. She also urged drivers to report any suspicious codes by calling the 24-hour customer service hotline at 305-579-4900.
With this measure, authorities seek to protect residents’ personal and financial information, ensuring that they do not fall prey to digital fraud.
