The project for a new Tampa Bay Rays stadium took a major step forward Thursday when the St. Petersburg City Council approved a $1.3 billion bond issue to finance construction. Still pending, however, is final approval by the Pinellas County Commission, which will vote on the matter in December.
Hurricane Impact and Urban Restoration Plan
Meanwhile, the Rays will not be able to play at Tropicana Field this year due to damage from Hurricane Milton. The team will temporarily move to Tampa’s Steinbrenner Field. Repairs to the Tropicana, which include a damaged roof and water leaks, are estimated at $55.7 million, according to the city of St. Petersburg.
This new stadium is part of an ambitious $6.5 billion project that seeks to revitalize the area near Tropicana Field. In addition to improving sports facilities, it is planned to correct the displacement of the black community that occurred in the area, promoting urban regeneration that will benefit all residents of the area.
Next Steps for the Tampa Bay Rays Stadium Project
The next crucial step will be a vote by the Pinellas County Commission on December 17, which will decide whether to approve the issuance of bonds payable through tourist taxes. If approved, the project could be ready for the 2028 season, with the Rays committed to remaining in St. Petersburg.
