The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reported Monday that, despite hurricane obstacles and address errors, nearly 100% of mail ballots in this year’s presidential election reached election authorities on time. In total, more than 99 million ballots were successfully processed by postal workers. It took extra measures to ensure proper delivery and avoid potential system failures.
Louis DeJoy, CEO of the USPS, noted that the resilience of postal employees allowed the elections to proceed without major setbacks. Regardless off the devastation caused by the hurricanes in states such as Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina, the USPS implemented extraordinary efforts to ensure the timely delivery of ballots.
Delivery Times and Some Minor USPS Issues
99.9% of ballots arrived at election offices within the one-week deadline, and an impressive 97.7% of ballots were delivered in as little as three days. While these times are similar to the 2020 election, some distribution issues did arise. In states such as California, Montana and New Mexico, out-of-state voter ballots were mistakenly sent out. That raised concerns about the accuracy of the delivery system.
However, the USPS responded quickly to these incidents, making corrections and working closely with local authorities to resolve the situations. Despite the setbacks, the postal workers’ union praised the efforts of employees who ensured that ballots arrived in a timely and safe manner, just as they did during the pandemic in 2020.
Looking to the future
Even with the successes, state officials, such as Minnesota’s Steve Simon and New Mexico’s Mandy Vigil, expressed a desire to continue working with the USPS to improve the voting process in future elections.
