Silvia Pinal, one of the most celebrated figures in Mexican cinema, passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. With a career that spanned over six decades, Pinal‘s influence on Mexican film, theater, and television remains undeniable. The Ministry of Culture of Mexico expressed its condolences, honoring her as a fundamental figure in the country’s entertainment history.

Pinal’s acting journey began in the late 1940s, quickly establishing her as a star during Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema. She made a memorable debut in 1949’s La Mujer que yo perdí, starring alongside the legendary Pedro Infante.

However, it was her collaboration with surrealist director Luis Buñuel that marked a defining moment in her career. In Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962), and Simon of the Desert (1965), Pinal’s performances in Buñuel‘s bold and avant-garde films gained her international acclaim.

Pinal’s talents were not limited to acting; she was also known for her musical and comedic abilities. In an era when stars were expected to excel in multiple disciplines, she effortlessly mastered acting, singing, dancing, and comedy, solidifying her place as a true quadruple threat.
